Status of Women Group

Statement of Purpose

The Status of Women Group is an informal network whose membership includes academic and general staff at all levels, as well as postgraduate students. It provides a forum for women on campus to discuss issues of importance to them, and it is a vehicle by which women can participate in decision-making in the University.

Background

The Status of Women Group was first established in 1983. In the intervening years it has grown in size and expanded its focus. There are now approximately 150 women on the mailing list. Originally its primary focus was to bring issues of importance to women into public debate in the University. For example, its first major area of activism was lobbying for the appointment of an equal opportunity officer; this occurred in 1986. While that role is still an important one, SWG is now also regularly approached to provide input on various University reviews. There is also a representative on the University's Equal Opportunity Advisory Committee.

It is in this context, for example, that it provided submissions to the Review of the Position of Women Academic Staff, the Review of the Position of Women General Staff, the Review of the Centre for Research on Women, and the draft report on Inclusive Curriculum.
